Director’s Corner
Happy 2024! To our returning readers, thank you for sticking with Habari and coming back for the first edition of the new year. For those who are new, I’m grateful that you took a chance on this newsletter and hope that you find something that is helpful. It’s Black History Month! It has almost been 100 years since the founding of Black History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Though the “why” behind the founding is not recorded, the consensus of scholars is that recognition and importance were the biggest reasons. I think those ideals continue to hold true today. People need representation. They need to see people that look like them making a difference and achieving great things. With so many amazing inventors, leaders, and people whose names and stories were lost to history, both intentionally and unintentionally, Black History Month is still important and relevant. As you read through this edition, I hope you will think about how we celebrate the impact and contributions of Black people in this country and around the world.
