CLE Scholarship Program

What do the Scholarships cover?

The Section Council annually considers and adopts as part of its budget an allowance for scholarships to be awarded to Members of the Section. These scholarships may be awarded to pay for the cost of tuition and related travel expenses for live CLE programs sponsored by the Section during such fiscal year, including the Section Annual Meeting.   Scholarships may also be awarded to pay for the cost of tuition for online CLE programs sponsored by the Section.

The Section Council shall annually appoint a Scholarship Committee (to be comprised of at least one Member of the Section Council, a Member of the Section Membership Committee, and a Member of the Section CLE Committee).  The purpose of awarding the scholarships is to facilitate participation and attendance at valuable CLE and meetings for members of the Section who otherwise may not be able to attend such events due to financial or other constraints.

Scholarship Criteria:

Preference in awarding scholarships will be given to individuals who are one or more of the following:

  • An active Member of the NCBA, with preference given to those who have served or who are currently serving in leadership roles in the NCBA or a local bar association.
  • A current Member of the Section.
  • An active participant in pro bono matters, which may include opportunities through local legal aid groups, a local bar association, or the NCBA (including volunteering for Call 4 All, Lawyer on the Line, Free Legal Answers, Hospice Pro Bono Project, Wills for Heroes, etc.).
  • A solo practitioner or an attorney practicing in a small partnership or firm of five (5) or fewer attorneys.

Who is eligible for the Scholarship?

The Scholarship Committee shall seek to identify recipients committed to building or maintaining a practice focusing on estate planning, estate administration, and/or fiduciary litigation. Any attorney member of the NCBA Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section is eligible to apply for CLE Scholarships. Non-member attorneys interested in CLE Scholarships are required to apply for membership in the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section before or concurrently with submission of an application for CLE Scholarships. Scholarships are not available for affiliate member CLE tuition.

How do I apply for the Scholarship?

Please complete the form below. Scholarship applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, June 19. If application is not received by then it will not be considered. Letters of recommendation from Section Members (no more than two) will be considered, but are not required.  The letters of recommendation should confirm that the applicant already works in or would like to work more in estate planning, estate administration, or fiduciary litigation and that the recommending Member is mentoring or assisting the applicant with that endeavor.

We will notify you if your Scholarship has been awarded; please, block out your schedule for the event you are applying so that you are ready to attend. Incomplete applications received will be returned without review.

What about confidentiality?

Although the Section may publicize the fact that Scholarships have been awarded, and the number of Scholarships so awarded, the individual identities of Scholarship applicants shall remain strictly confidential, unless the recipient allows for publication.
