The Criminal Justice Section represents the interests of all lawyers who participate in the criminal justice system, including defense attorneys, prosecutors and members of the judiciary. The section is dedicated to helping North Carolina criminal lawyers better serve their clients and the state. The annual Peter S. Gilchrist III and Wade M. Smith Awards banquet honors the career accomplishments of a prosecutor and a defense attorney, while section CLE programs keep practitioners updated on changes in the law and explore specialized areas in depth.
Members receive discounted CLE opportunities, access to a members-only online community forum and invitations to networking socials, panel discussions and Lunch & Learns. The section also offers practice-specific blogs, legislative and policy updates, ethics guidance and opportunities to engage in pro bono work, providing meaningful ways to grow professionally while supporting the broader legal community.

The Government & Public Sector, Criminal Justice and Zoning, Planning & Land Use Sections are pleased to award an annual scholarship of $1,000 to an unpaid intern working in a North Carolina government or public interest law department.
