Welcome to the November 2022 edition of North Carolina Lawyer magazine, the flagship publication of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Inspired by this year’s law school orientation programs, President Clayton Morgan discusses the next generation of lawyers in the President’s Perspective and the significant impact they will have on the continued success of the North Carolina Bar Association and Foundation. Insight is also provided by columnists Lisa Williford, chair of the Young Lawyers Division, Catherine Sanders Reach, director of the NCBA Center for Practice Management, and Professor Laura Graham of Wake Forest University School of Law (“Writing That Works”).

Beginning with the NCBA Annual Meeting in June and continuing with the N.C. Bar Center’s first in-person dedication ceremony in three years in October, five new NCBF Endowment Justice Funds have been dedicated this year. New additions to the NCBF Liberty Garden were also recognized during the Bar Center ceremony, and this year’s recipients of NCBF Endowment Hubert B. Humphrey Justice Fund scholarships have been announced by the Young Lawyers Division.

Our wide array of member interviews and recognitions begins with Ashley Campbell, newly installed chief executive officer of Legal Aid of North Carolina. Readers will also hear from U.S. Air Force veteran and pro bono advocate Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette; founding chair of the NCBA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee, Collins Saint; accessibility advocate and former Paralympic silver medalist Jamie Dean; iconic small-town attorney Joel Harbinson of Taylorsville; Elon Law associate professor and Association of Legal Writing Directors Diversity Award recipient Tiffany Atkins; and Walter Brock, latest recipient of the Litigation Section’s Advocate’s Award.

Coverage is also devoted to special events at UNC School of Law honoring their first Black female graduate, the late Sylvia X. Allen of Fayetteville, and her lasting legacy as a prosecutor and member of the Cumberland County Bar.
